Making Student Success the Highest Standard
Virginia is a national leader in setting high education standards and holding schools, teachers and students accountable to them. Right now, the Commonwealth is modernizing those standards to better align them with the needs of students and employers in a 21st Century economy. New Standards of Accreditation maintain Virginia’s high standards for school performance and place new emphasis on cultivating real-world skills, eliminating achievement gaps for minority students and incentivizing continuous improvement.
The state is also modernizing the Virginia Standards of Learning to reduce unnecessary high-stakes tests and dig deeper on what students have learned and how ready they are to apply that knowledge.
The goal of these reforms is to use the latest research and technology to advance Virginia’s position as a national leader in school and student accountability so that every graduate is ready for what’s next after high school.
