Summer Meals
For kids in the Commonwealth who rely on the free or reduced price meals they receive during the school year, summer vacation can be especially tough. When schools close, some families struggle to find the resources they need to ensure their kids aren’t hungry during the summer months.
This is where No Kid Hungry (NKH) is stepping in. NKH helps local organizations launch and operate summer meal sites that are run by schools and community groups. This week, No Kid Hungry held a Summer Action Week to ensure communities know about neighborhood meal sites.
Some of our communities have been very busy and the summer of 2019 has shaped up to be innovative and exciting! Here are just a few examples of summer meals programs around the state:
· Southwest: Danville City, Giles County
· Central: Richmond City, Goochland County
· Southeast: Peninsula
· North: Loudoun County
I hope everyone takes a few minutes to check out the NKH Toolkit to see how you can help them make the public aware of meal sites in your own area. During the last few hours of their Summer Action Week, help NKH get the word out by reminding families about texting “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 877-877 to find meal sites near them.
