An addition to the April Board of Education meeting was a one day retreat. The retreat, held at Hermitage High School in Henrico County, focused on the Standards of Quality. The Board received staff presentations on research and data, held a panel discussion with local school superintendents and considered draft SOQ proposals. Visit Board of Education Meetings for a copy of the draft proposals. During May and June, the Board will be hosting focus groups in several regions of the Commonwealth with education, business, and community stakeholders. The Board intends to approve comprehensive SOQ revisions by August 2019. These revisions will be submitted to the governor and General Assembly to impact the budgetary and legislative process for the 2020 General Assembly.
A special thank you to Lee County superintendent, Dr. Brian Austin; Norfolk City superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone; Fairfax County superintendent, Dr. Scott Brabrand; and Greensville County superintendent, Dr. Kim Evans, for their insight and participation in the superintendent’s panel. Feedback from our divisions guides the work that we do and it’s invaluable.
