Supporting Early Learning
Quality early learning experiences are an essential element to preparing children to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. Young children benefit from positive, interactive and engaging educational environments to learn and explore. Virginia is committed to supporting all children to access excellent early learning experiences.
The Virginia Department of Education helps prepare all children for kindergarten by supporting birth to five programming, including the Virginia Preschool Initiative and Early Childhood Special Education. Through focusing on key classroom practices, such as using of high-quality curriculum and assessment, supporting positive teacher-child interactions and ongoing family engagement, Virginia’s early learning programs support the growth and development of young children.
On July 1, 2021, the VDOE became responsible for child care licensing and the child care subsidy program. This shift is part of Virginia’s broader effort to unify and strengthen the birth-five landscape in Virginia.
